(meaning, the beloved Prophet’s paternal aunt is Sayyidunā ꜤUthmān’s maternal grandmother). Sayyidunā ꜤUthmānرَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ  was martyred very unjustly on the 18th of Dhū al-ijjah, 35 AH.

A Few Distinctions of Sayyidunā Uthmān رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ

Sayyidunā ꜤUthmān رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ  has many virtues, but today we will have the honour of hearing about a few of his distinctive qualities:

First Distinction: Uthmān Ghani رَضِىَ اللهُ عَـنْهُ is Dhū al-Nūrayn

The first and well-known distinction of Sayyidunā ꜤUthmān رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ  is that he is called Dhū al-Nūrayn (meaning, possessor of two lights). Among the ranks of the Companions رَضِیَ اللهُ عَنْهُم, only he was granted the title Dhū al-Nūrayn.

Someone once came to the fourth Caliph of Islam, Sayyidunā ꜤAlī b. Abī Ṭālib رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ, and requested: "Could you please mention something about Sayyidunā ꜤUthmān رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ?"

Sayyidunā ꜤAlī رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ replied: "ꜤUthmān رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ  is that individual whom even the angels refer to as Dhū al-Nūrayn."[1]

First Reason for the Title Dhū al-Nūrayn

O devotees of the Prophet! Why is Sayyidunā ꜤUthmānرَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ  called Dhū al-Nūrayn?

There are several reasons for this:

(1) One very famous reason is that the beloved Prophet’s two daughters came into the marriage of Sayyidunā ꜤUthmān رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ  one after the other, and that is why he is called Dhū al-Nūrayn.[2]
