Accounts of the generosity of the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم
During the Battle of Hunayn, the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم was generous beyond imagination. He صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم gifted many people who lived in a village with 100 camels each. (Bukhari, vol. 3, p. 118, Hadith 4337)
Sayyiduna Safwan Bin Umayyah رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ (before accepting Islam and during the Battle of Hunayn) asked for some goats, which filled a jungle between two mountains, and the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم gave all of them to him. Sayyiduna Safwan Bin Umayyah رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ returned to his people and said, ‘O my people! Accept Islam! By Allah Almighty, Muhammad صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم is so generous that there is no fear of becoming dependent. (Mishkat Al-Masabih, vol. 2, p. 346, Hadith 5806)
Sayyiduna Sa’eed Bin Musayyab رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ reports that Sayyiduna Safwan Bin Umayyah رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ said: The Messenger of Allah صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم granted me wealth on the Day of Hunayn even though he was the most disliked person in my eyes, but he continued to give to me until he became the most beloved in my eyes. (Sunan Al-Tirmizi, vol. 2, p. 147, Hadith 666)
The honourable scholars state: This giving of the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم on this single day exceeded the giving and forgiveness of generous kings for an entire life. The jungle was full of goats, and the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم was continuing to distribute it, with masses gathering to such an extent, that he was moving backwards to accommodate them. Until a time when everything was distributed and a Bedouin pulled the blessed shawl of the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم away from his blessed body, leaving a mark on his blessed shoulder and back. In response to this, the Holy Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم only said: O people! Do not make haste, by Allah, you will never find me to be miserly. (Bukhari, vol. 2, p. 260, Hadith: 2821; Malfuzaat, p. 122)
