A misconception common amongst people

Dear Islamic brothers, there is no doubt that Allah Almighty is Merciful and Generous towards His people. However, this does not mean that a person should disobey him, be lazy in acting upon His commandments and yet still hope in His mercy. Similarly, on the basis that Allah’s mercy is so great, one should not neglect salah and the obligatory fasts of Ramadan. You should certainly have hope of forgiveness due to the mercy of Allah Almighty, but you should also perform good actions at the same time. There is a misconception amongst people regarding the mercy of Allah whereby sinful and non-practising people become heedless of being punished. In doing so, they end up saying things like: ‘We have complete certainty that Allah Almighty will not punish us; His mercy is extremely great. Even if we do commit a few sins, this does not reduce His mercy. Etc.’ Note that such people have been reprimanded in a Hadith.

The Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم has said: ‘The intelligent one is he who makes his inner self (nafs) obedient to him and performs actions for the afterlife. And foolish is he who acts according to his desires and also hopes for the mercy of Allah Almighty.’ (Mishkat, vol. 3, p. 130, Hadith 5289)

Sayyiduna Yahya Bin Mu’azrazi رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه has said: ‘There is no stupidity greater than a person planting the seeds of Hell and hoping to harvest the fruits of Paradise; his actions are of the sinful but his desired destination is of the virtuous.’ (Kimiya-e-Sa’adat, vol. 2, p. 811)
